Shockwaves Through Asia’s Semiconductor Arteries
In late September 2025, Super Typhoon Ragasa swept across Southeast Asia, exposing once again how
vulnerable global supply chains remain to natural disasters. The storm carried different names in different
regions - Nando in the Philippines, Ragasa internationally, and locally translated in Taiwan, Hong Kong, and
Vietnam - but its impact was universal. Striking the Philippines on 21 September, Taiwan on 23 September,
and Hong Kong, Southern China, and Vietnam in the days that followed, Ragasa left a trail of disruption across
some of the world’s most critical electronics hubs.
Country-Level Impacts
Philippines (Northern Luzon
• Over 700,000 households lost power.
• Bridges and highways were damaged, disrupting smaller PCB and electronics component
suppliers.
• Agricultural losses added pressure on local resources and energy supply.
Taiwan
• Hualien and nearby regions saw floods and landslides.
• Flights, ferries, and ground transport were suspended, affecting packaging and testing logistics.
• Temporary factory slowdowns due to unstable power and flooding.
Hong Kong & Southern China
• Major ports (Yantian, Shekou, Nansha) were closed, stranding shipments.
• Hundreds of flights were cancelled at Hong Kong International Airport.
• Foxconn and other contract manufacturers halted production.
• Inland trucking and rail services were suspended, deepening congestion risks.
Vietnam (Northern Provinces)
• The storm weakened but still brought heavy rain and landslide risks.
• Precautionary flight cancellations and infrastructure reinforcements.
• Minimal direct semiconductor manufacturing impact, but regional logistics flows slowed.
